Project ESR 11: American and European Perceptions of the Rise of Regional Powers

American and European Perceptions of the Rise of Regional Powers (GIGA) This project investigates representations of the rise of regional powers in the United States and the European Union. It starts from the premise that the meaning attached to certain processes, events and behaviours guides (but does not determine) political actions.
By comparing and categorizing representations of the rising powers in the US and Europe, as well as contested interpretations within the US and the EU, this project asks what the political consequences of adopting particular understandings are. Moreover, by drawing on research from within the network, the project aims to identify possible misperceptions regarding particular behaviours of regional powers – for example, in relation to the motivations and ambitions of the respective actors.
